 Reconstruction of old knives

( I can copy a knife also )

If you have older knives and want them to look and act like new, then you have come to the right place. Sometimes, you will know if they have good steel from using them , which will give you impetus to want the knife reconditioned. Older carbon steel is almost always good and is a good beginning to start a knife collection. The process begins by contacting me. Ideally, you have some photos taken of the knives flat on and on edge, showing me the top and bottom view of the handles . One can also xerox copy them or scan them. Some knives do not have a full tang and can sometimes present a problem in reconstruction, and should generally be avoided when purchasing. Any knives sent must be insured for replacement value with the shipper.

Any and all rust can be removed by me. The question is if there will be enough steel left to work with. This mainly comes into play on the steel on the handle. Any rust left will be sealed in and become literally benign , but it makes sense to try to get as much clean steel as possible. Edges can be straightened out , which will simply narrow the blade.

Prices for reconditioning will vary to the point that I will usually ( but not always ) have to have the pieces in front of me to give an estimate. Sometimes I will also need to adjust that estimate upward depending on what I find when the wood handle is removed but, I can sometimes give dollar parameters , but not always.

You usually get back a wonderful knife ready for years and years of use.

Top two knives need new handles. 2nd down needs radical edge grinding , as well as 4th down .
Steel is pitted . I did a spark test, and the sparks indicated that the steel was very high quality .

Top two knives with handles removed . steel on the handle will need to be scoured down to clean steel without making the steel so thin as to make the steel to thin.

Stripped handles ready for Cocobolo handles.

Handles sanded but steel blades not yet sharpened or polished.

Voila! Ils sont magnifiques !! Polished , triple oiled and ready for shipment .
